MRS. DEMPSEY'S AUDITION TIPS

1. Plan to stay at auditions for the whole time. Part of your audition is showing your commitment to the work.
2. Practice out loud with your scene partner several times. Say the lines differently each time. Choose the best!
3. Focus on connecting with your scene partner, looking at each other often and really listening to each other. React with your face and body to what you hear. A lot of acting is reacting.
4. Help your scene partner do his or her best. The director is looking for people who connect, not stars.
5. Don't try to memorize the sides, but get familiar enough with the lines that you can look up at your scene partner often, and out away from your scene partner - but only if appropriate to the scene.
6. Make decisions about when you will look at each other and when you look away.
7. Make changes in your face and body so the director can see your emotions and reactions to what you hear.
8. Don't try to plan movement - the director will block the show later. Instead, spend your time on saying lines differently, and finding ways to connect with your scene partner.
9. Find the love! Even if there is anger, that stems from love. If you didn't love, you wouldn't care enough to be angry.
10. Don't just read lines, find ways to think about what you are hearing and have your own lines come from inside you based on what you hear. Keep acting and being in character - even when you are not speaking,
11. Look for ways to use variety - variety in pitch, volume, pace and rhythm. Your anger, especially, is good in variety.
12. Look for ways to vary your interpretation of the character - show the director someone different when you read. Change your stance, your pitch, your pace, your facial expressions, your gestures, etc.
13. Breathe! Take a deep breath before you start, and breathe during your liens when a break makes sense.
14. Generally, people need to speak more slowly than they think is natural!
15. Pick up cues. This means to start your line as soon as the person before you has finished. Take your breath during the last three (3) words of the person speaking before you, so you can start talking as soon as they say the last word. Occasionally, a pause is written into the audition sides, but generally avoid silences between lines. The director will understand if you lose your place and have a pause, but try to keep the reading as smooth as possible.
16. Speak loudly and pronounce the consonants clearly. Project and enunciate!
17. You may fold your paper in half horizontally, so you have a smaller item to hold. Hold the paper up, so that your face is up and out.
18. Keep your hair back behind your ear and away from your face during the audition. The director wants to see your facial expressions!
19. Be prepared to change your read if you are given a direction. The director may choose to suggest something that is different for the character or the scene - this is to let you show that you can follow direction.
20. Know that the director wants you to do your best and succeed! The role is yours in the moment - enjoy it!
